Recreation Commission
February 15, 2007

Roll Call: Doug Lohmeier, Pam Meyers, Mary Lou Isaac, Grace Ficke, Dave Nichols, Wayne Mosley, Michele Gottschlich, Gus Janszen.

Called to Order at 7:35am.

Recognition of Visitors: none

Approval of Minutes:
Two changes need to be made – correct the spelling of Grace’s last name in line 6, and correct the date for Phi Lambda Pi’s Holiday Party (correct date is 12/9/06).
Motion to approve minutes as corrected made by Michele Gottschlich; seconded by Wayne Mosley. Motion approved.

New Business: none

Old Business:
Tri-Health Report
·       Dave will evaluate the need for a second rowing machine in the fitness center. Mason Recreation recently removed one of their two rowers. Fitness Center space is limited.
·       Information will go out in the next newsletter, reminding everyone that if they enter the fitness center in a group, each person in the group is required to use their ID card. This allows us to keep accurate usage rosters; in addition to safety and security.

Sharonville’s field request:
·       They are loosing their flood plain fields, but they are looking to develop new fields.
·       They will use what ever fields and time we have left after our teams set their schedules.
·       Would Sharonville consider fixing up the former Churchhill’s property for the fall season? As far as Doug knows, there are no plans for the Churchhill property.
Motion to approve Sharonville’s field request, with the fields usage at our discretion, made by Wayne Mosley; seconded by Mary Lou Isaac. Motion approved.

Director’s Report
Moeller Lacrosse’s request for fields
·       Mike Albrinck, contacted Dave after the last meeting, and thanks the Commission for considering Moeller Lacrosse’s request for fields. Moeller has found a field to use, and it is working well for them. In retrospect, the decision was the correct one considering the wear and tear on the village’s field. Michele talked to Councilman Schaefer, and he encourages Commission to continue considering various uses for the former Churchhill property.

Mary Lou, Wayne, Dave, and Micki Ficke will meet today to begin the “updated decor process” for the Community (Flex) Room.

Dave is creating an Emergency Action Plan for the Recreation Department. The Police Chief and the Fire Chief have both reviewed the plan, and recommended a few changes. Dave hopes to have it completed and distributed to staff by the end of February.

The data for the 11:00am - Noon time frame on Sundays continues to show eight to ten people using the fitness center. The additional hour seems to be justifiable. We will continue to evaluate through May.

150 Skate Park Questionnaires were returned.
·       Of those returned, 80% were against the construction of a skate park. Of the 20% in favor to build a skate park, 21 people (or 70%) indicated they had not been to a skate park in the past two years.
·       When asked if respondents had benefited from the “construction” phases at the Recreation Center, 88% said yes.
·       Overall, 98% gave an excellent or good satisfaction rating, 3 people rated satisfaction as fair, and no one gave a poor rating.
·       57% of the respondents were female, 43% male.
·       8% of the respondents were 6-17 years old; 34% were 35-49; 36% were 50-64; 20% were 65 or older.
·       51% of respondents had no one under 17 in their household.
·       59% indicated they received their “recreation” information from the newsletter; 25% indicated from the email distribution; 16% indicated from the website.
·       Dave has already discussed these results with the father who initiated the questionnaire.
·       Dave will review the data with the Mayor and Council. With 80% responding no to building a skatepark in Evendale, Dave thinks nothing further needs to be done.
·       It was suggested that if the department ever redesigns the playground areas, we could consider adding a few elements for skateboarding and rollerblading.
·       A list of priorities from the respondents will be forthcoming.

Phi Lambda Pi Report:
·       Open house events have included bunko, flag football, karaoke, and dodgeball. The group’s annual ski trip was cancelled because of warm temperatures and the lack of snow. Interest was not great either, so the group will look at doing something different next year.
·       Summer trips are planned: June 15 - 17th to Gatlinburg by van; and July 31st- August 5th to Myrtle Beach by chartered bus. (Chaperone to Phi member is approximately 1:4 or 1:5.)
·       Winter Spirit Clothing sales are underway.
·       A documentary about Phi Lambda Pi is being produced. It will explain what Phi Lambda Pi is about since many people don’t know what it is; don’t understand what it’s about, what the members do, etc.  It will be used at conferences, seminars, etc. The documentary will take about a year to produce. When complete, Commission members would like to view it.
·       Phi Lambda Pi Awards Night will be March 17th. This year’s theme is Grease (1950’s).
·       Approximately 100 kids belong to Phi; 60 are active (25-35 Phi members attending weekly, depending on schedules, sports, etc).

Open Discussion
Update on the trails
·       A meeting held after last month’s commission meeting was productive. Everyone who attended has the same goals, and “uniform” signage throughout the trail system is being worked on.
·       Commission would like the village trails completed before village funds are given to the Park Hills trails system, if the Park Hills section would remain exclusively for Park Hills’ residents.
·       The bridge, on the lower farm trail, is being planned.

Pam would like to know if Commission meetings could start at 8:00am or be moved to the evenings. The 7:30am start time works better for most members; therefore, the meetings will still begin at 7:30am.

Youth Soccer Spring Season
·       Gus is working with Kristen to procure trainers.
·       Many of the coaches are being retained, and some are getting their licenses.
·       Art Sieder will take over the U-6 level.
·       The Youth Sport Handbook for coaches should be ready for the start of this year’s spring soccer season.
·       This past fall was our first season in SAY Soccer, and three of our teams advanced to the state tournament.

Youth Fall Basketball Season
·       The season is about to wrap up.
·       Sherwin Anderson has done a good job with the teams. He has been reliable; which was a concern, in the beginning, to some commission members. Only one coach decided not to ask Sherwin to work with the team.

Motion to adjourn made at 8:41am by Doug Lohmeier; seconded by Gus Janszen. Motion approved.
